This clay with 25% rough grain chamotte (previously fired clay) can be used for bigger pieces such as large and thick tiles, plaques and statues. Because of the grain size of the chamotte, up to 2 mm, this clay is excellently suited to bake evenly. Firing temperature is 1832-2000°F (1000 – 1260°C).

Our clay comes in different shapes and colours. We offer different types for different purposes and techniques. All types of clay will remain malleable for a week after being removed from the package. If kept in an airtight clay bucket, it will remain soft and malleable for a longer period. Should it dry out (lose water), by adding water, it will be malleable again. This is possible until the clay is fired at 1112 °F (600 °C).

We supply a rich clay for practicing that contains little to no fine chamotte. This clay is very supple with a stable structure and is very resilient. This is suitable for a potter’s wheel.

We also supply chamotte clay three grain sizes: fine (grain 0-0.5 mm), medium (grain 0-1.0 mm) and rough (grain 0-2.0 mm).

Chamotte is grinded previously fired clay. It is added to the clay in order to give it certain characteristics during the firing. Chamotte ensures that an object holds it shape and shrinks somewhat less, although all clay shrinks by firing. Chamotte provides some stability and has the effect of a frame. It also ensures a more porous clay so that air can escape better during the firing. Chamotte does require more strength to sculpt it, therefore it is less suitable for the younger children.

Please note that clay does not tolerate frost therefore it is not possible to transport clay during a period of frost.
